If you install your Canada eSIM before the flight, you are online within a minute of switching off airplane mode — in time to message home, check your hotel address and book a ride before you reach the baggage hall. Below is what to do on landing, followed by the main ways into town from Toronto Pearson (YYZ), Vancouver (YVR), Montréal–Trudeau (YUL) and Calgary (YYC).
Before you land
- Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and set it as your mobile-data line. The plan does not start until it connects in Canada, so installing early costs you nothing.
- Save the essentials offline: your hotel address, booking confirmations and the first few kilometers of your route, in case the arrivals area is busy or you need to troubleshoot.
- Sign in to Uber or Lyft and the Transit app at home. Sign-in codes go to your home number, which is easier to receive before you leave.
- Check your entry documents. Many visa-exempt travelers flying to Canada need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before boarding; the official Government of Canada website explains who needs what.
The moment you land
- Turn off airplane mode.
- Check that the eSIM is selected for mobile data and that data roaming is on for the eSIM line (and off for your home SIM).
- Give the phone a moment to find the network named on your plan page — Rogers on standard plans; Bell, Telus or SaskTel on Premium plans.
No connection after a minute or two? Switch airplane mode on and off once, or restart the phone. If that does not help, choose the network manually in your mobile network settings. Major Canadian airports offer free Wi-Fi, which is a useful backup while you troubleshoot or look up the quick fixes in our complete Canada eSIM guide.
Toronto Pearson (YYZ)
The UP Express train leaves from Terminal 1 for Union Station in downtown Toronto, a trip of about 25 minutes, with trains roughly every 15 minutes and stops at Weston, Mount Dennis and Bloor. You can tap a contactless credit or debit card or a phone wallet on the PRESTO reader, use a PRESTO card or buy a ticket. Arriving at Terminal 3? Take the free Terminal Link train to Terminal 1 first.
For a cheaper, slower option, the TTC’s 900 Airport Express bus links both terminals with Kipling subway station. Uber and Lyft pick up at designated ride-share zones, and the app tells you which zone to walk to; taxis and limousines wait at signed stands outside arrivals.
Vancouver (YVR)
The Canada Line SkyTrain runs from the airport to Waterfront Station downtown in about 25 minutes. You can tap a contactless card or phone at the fare gate — no Compass card needed for a single trip — and remember to tap out at the end. Journeys from the airport stations include an extra airport charge, the YVR AddFare, which is added automatically.
Waterfront Station is right next to Canada Place, where most Alaska cruises depart; if you are boarding a ship, our Canada–US cross-border guide explains what happens to your data once you sail into US waters. Uber and Lyft both operate in Vancouver and pick up at a designated ride-hailing area; follow the airport signs and your app.
Montréal–Trudeau (YUL)
The STM’s 747 bus runs around the clock between the airport and downtown Montréal, ending at Berri-UQAM metro station. Buy your fare from the machines in the international arrivals area, which accept bank cards — on board, drivers only take exact change in coins. The 747 fare doubles as a 24-hour pass for the city’s buses and metro. The REM light-rail line is being extended to the airport, but until that station opens, the bus is the public transit option; check the STM website for current details.
Signs at the airport are in French and English, and French is the main language in the city and across Québec. Download French for offline use in Google Translate before you land — our essential apps guide has more apps worth setting up. Taxis wait at the official stand outside arrivals, and Uber picks up at a designated area.
Calgary (YYC)
Calgary Transit’s Route 300 is a limited-stop bus between the airport and downtown along Centre Street, and Route 100 connects with the CTrain at Saddletowne station. Buy tickets at the vending machines by the bus stops, which take cash, debit and credit cards. Uber and Lyft are the airport’s authorized ride-share services, and taxis wait at stands on the arrivals level.
Many visitors head straight for the Rockies, roughly 90 minutes’ drive west to Banff. Scheduled shuttles run from the airport to Canmore, Banff and Lake Louise; book ahead in summer. Before you leave the city, download offline maps for the mountains — signal is good in Banff and Lake Louise village but disappears on many trails and on most of the Icefields Parkway.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to buy a SIM card at a Canadian airport?
No. With the eSIM installed at home, you connect to a Canadian network as soon as airplane mode is off, so there is no counter or queue to visit.
What is the fastest way from Toronto Pearson to downtown?
The UP Express train from Terminal 1 to Union Station takes about 25 minutes. Travelers landing at Terminal 3 ride the free Terminal Link train to Terminal 1 first.
Can I order an Uber when I land?
Yes. Your eSIM data covers the app, and pickups at Toronto, Vancouver, Montréal and Calgary airports are at designated zones that the app directs you to.
